What are the best oats to use?
The best oats you can use for this recipe are old fashioned rolled oats. They are steamed and rolled to become flat. You can save your cooking time and the texture and flavour are still maintained. You can easily find it at any local supermarkets.
Quick oats are already cooked and dried out – they become too soft as they absorb liquid, and they lose all of their texture. Also avoid steel cut oats for this recipe.
Peanut butter with oatmeal works amazingly well! I used to use shop bought peanut butter but not anymore. Homemade peanut butter can be made with a food processor in 10 minutes!
So why not make up a batch and keep it in the cupboard! You can also try it with almond butter. Of course, you can use any peanut butter so if you’ve got a jar there and you want to get straight to it, don’t hesitate.
Sweetener: If you prefer your oats sweet, try coconut sugar, maple syrup, honey or agave.
Cinnamon: I like the warm spiciness and aroma of cinnamon when it’s mixed with oats. Top it on!
Salt: I use pink salt or sea salt for this recipe, but really you can use any salt.
Milk: I prefer almond milk. You can also use dairy milk or soy milk – whatever your preference is.
Flax seeds: I prefer using grounded ones. Flax seeds are a perfect source of fibre. This is optional.

How to add peanut butter to oats
I’ve found that timing is everything for ensuring this delicious peanut butter oatmeal bowl! Scoop up a spoonful of creamy peanut butter, and put it into the cooked oatmeal just before it’s served.
Don’t add it to the pot while you’re cooking the oatmeal. Warm oatmeal melts peanut butter without heating it. Adding it at this point also ensures the taste and flavour of peanut butter is well preserved.
Peanut butter on oatmeal
You could just add one spoonful peanut butter, but stop there. This recipe calls for two spoonfuls of peanutty goodness! Live a little!
Cooked hot oatmeal gently absorbs and softens the peanut butter creating a great breakfast table nutty aroma – heaven!
Peanut butter banana variation
If you prefer natural sweetness, peanut butter and banana works well. Add ripe banana and crush it into the oats as they cook. We enjoy banana oatmealtopped with plenty of maple syrup and fresh fruit.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Bowl Recipe
- 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1¾ cup milk (I used almond milk)
- 4 tablespoons peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- ⅛ tablespoon pink salt (or any)
- ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Place milk and salt into a small saucepan and heat it up until boiling point on high heat.
- Once it's boiled, reduce to medium heat. Add old fashioned oats and simmer. Stir with a spatula often and simmer until the milk disappears. It takes about 8 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and place the oatmeal into a bowl. Place peanut butter on top and maple syrup. Sprinkle cinnamon and add your favourite toppings.That's it! Serve immediately!
